Import / Firefox

Bring Firefox bookmarks
into Aside.

Export Firefox bookmarks to Netscape HTML, then pick that file in Aside on iPhone. This is a file import. Aside does not connect to Firefox.

Firefox is current. Use Bookmarks → Manage bookmarks → Import and Backup → Export bookmarks to HTML. Don’t use Firefox’s private JSON backup — Aside cannot read that JSON.

Start on iPhone · No sign-in needed for the Local Library

In the other app

Export the file

  1. 01

    Bookmarks → Manage bookmarks

In Firefox, open Bookmarks → Manage bookmarks (the Library window).

  2. 02

Import and Backup → Export bookmarks to HTML

Open Import and Backup and choose Export bookmarks to HTML. Save the Netscape HTML file. Do not use Backup, Restore, or Firefox’s private JSON backup.

  3. 03

    Put the HTML on iPhone

Save the HTML in the Files app, then pick it in Aside. A Firefox JSON backup will not import.

Aside

Open the file in Aside

  1. 01

    First-run ImportIntroductionSheet

The first time you open Aside, ImportIntroductionSheet offers “Import saves from these apps”. Choose the file there.

  2. 02

    Empty Home: Import existing saves

If Home has no saves, tap “Import existing saves” (feed-empty-import).

  3. 03

    Account, below Storage: account-import

Open Account. Below the Storage row, tap “Import from other apps” (account-import). This is not the Storage settings page.

What comes across

  • url — the bookmark link
  • title — the bookmark title
  • folderPath — Firefox bookmark folders
  • tags — Netscape tags when present
  • addedAt — when the bookmark was added
  • notes — only if a Netscape <DD> note is present

What stays behind

  • notes — a typical Firefox HTML export has no Netscape <DD> notes
  • javascript: and data: URLs — skipped, not saved
  • Firefox private JSON backup — not an import format

A few things to know

Before you begin.

What if the file is dirty or truncated?

Aside skips broken rows when it can, or says the file cannot be read. Use the original Firefox bookmarks HTML. A rewritten copy or a JSON backup may not import.

What about javascript: or data: bookmarks?

Aside skips javascript: and data: URLs. They are not saved.

What about a duplicate URL?

A URL already in Aside is not added again. Importing the same file twice does not duplicate those saves.

What if the file is large?

A large library can take a while. Stay in Aside until it finishes, or pause and continue later. Leaving the App may pause the import.

Can I import Firefox’s JSON backup?

No. Aside reads Netscape HTML. Firefox’s private JSON backup is only for restoring Firefox. Export bookmarks to HTML instead.

Export the file,
then start on iPhone.
